Why Sexual Predators Attack
Advances in technology have
improved our quality of life and ability to function effectively in a
dramatic
way. Unfortunately, because of these technological changes, innocently
putting
yourself in the path of a sexual predator is easier today than ever
before.
Fortunately, you can avoid finding yourself in danger by learning about
the
reasons sexual predators prey upon their victims. Doing so will help
you to
avoid predators and keep yourself out of harms way.
Sexual and online predators
search for victims for a variety of reasons. Some are simply looking
for a good
time and will press for a sexual encounter. Others are more dangerous,
looking
to kidnap their victims or cause bodily harm. Some start out looking
for a good
time and then panic, leading to a murder to cover up their own shame at
the
crime they’ve committed. Regardless of their intentions, sexual
predators are
focused solely on their personal needs.
When studying the actions of
sexual and online predators, it’s important to be realistic about their
intentions and the outcome of their actions. Reasons for preying on
innocent
victims and children vary from person to person. A predator may be
looking for
a sex object or a personal slave. While we’d prefer to believe these
types of
situations do not exist, there are predators who will kidnap young
children and
sell them as sex slaves on the black market. These children disappear
without a
trace and most are never seen again.
Take these worse case
scenarios into consideration before starting a conversation with a
stranger
online. Keep these same scenarios in mind when you sit down to talk to
your
children about the dangers of sexual predators and online strangers.
While
these discussions should remain open, honest, and serious, you do not
need to
provide graphic details to your young children in order to make your
point. Use
tact, but truth, to describe what can happen if your children come in
contact
with a predator.
While sometimes
scary, a
proper education is the best line of defense when it comes to keeping
you and
your children safe from online predators. Remember, you should
immediately
terminate all lines of communication if you are ever in doubt about the
intentions of the person you are talking to. Regardless of your
emotional
state, never put yourself at risk. The Internet can be a wonderful tool
for
meeting new people, but it’s just as easy to meet individuals with
negative
intentions. Stay aware, and stay safe.
