How to Protect
Yourself from Internet Abuse
The Internet is an amazing place. Nowhere else
in the world
will you find a database of information that can be reached by almost
everyone
on earth with only the click of a mouse or a few simple keystrokes.
With the
recent, rapid rise in Internet use, it’s no surprise to find that
people are
using it to satisfy their personal needs. Unfortunately, not all of
those
people have good intentions.
Computer technology has evolved to match the increased need
to monitor those who are using the Internet.
Sadly, some of this technology has fallen into
the wrong hands, so while
you or your child is searching the internet for that last minute
homework
assignment, chatting with friends, or searching for that next love
interest,
someone else may be sitting back and watching every website you visit
and every
keystroke you make. While this is blatant abuse of the Internet, it
still
happens and it is a very real concern.
While not everyone you meet on the Internet is going to turn
out to be an online predator, you can never be too careful. Online
predators
intentionally abuse the Internet by using it as a tool to find their
next
victims. There are plenty of people who are genuinely looking for a
friend,
there are even more who are looking for someone to hurt or manipulate
into
fulfilling their needs.
Use caution whenever you begin new contact with a stranger
on the Internet. Treat your personal information in a guarded manner at
all
times, never sharing more than is necessary. Do not tolerate any level
of
disrespect or inappropriate behavior. If you find yourself in the midst
of a
conversation that has become uncomfortable, end it. Do not argue with,
or
validate, anyone who is speaking to you in a vulgar manner. The best
thing you
can do is cut off all contact, block the other person from being able
to
contact you, and report the crude behavior. If you find yourself the
victim of
online harassment, report it to the Internet provider and/or your local
authorities.
Over time, you’ll feel more confident in your ability to
find new friends online and the ease with which you can access the
plethora of
information the Internet has to offer. Never let your guard down, even
as your
confidence levels rise. Being cautious and aware of every move you make
will
aid you in keeping yourself safe from those who are only out to abuse
the tools
we all share.
